If I activate my iPhone with T-Mobile, can I still update it?

Iphone 3G applications
namakielin asked:

I am going to purchase an iPhone 3G, which I am looking forward to doing so. Yet, I am currently with T-Mobile on a flex account, note I’m only 17. So, if I unlock it, will I still have the simplicity of updating it to Apple’s or AT&T’s future applications?

Another question in mind is will I be able to lock it back into place if a change of mind comes to plan to become an AT&T member.

AND one more thing, is there a prepaid plan for the iPhone?

Thank,
Flip

    Yes & no. You can always update a phone thru your PC. There are many places that you can download updated firmware for a phone. But! The new applications that are going to be out in the future won’t be in the uprgade process. Most of the cool programs that are coming out for the new iPhone are from private developers. Neither Apple, nor ATT will incorporate them into the upgrades. Those apps must be downloaded & installed individually {just as any comp software.} Once you unlock the phone you will have to install the update personally. Not to worry tho. there are many websites dedicated to keeping any cellphone updated.
    As concerns relocking the phone. There’s no need. When you “unlock” a phone, you remove the provider lock. The provider lock tells the phone which network it allowed to operate on. Without a provider lock, the phone is free to operate on any network that utilizes a simcard. {i.e. ATT, T-mo, Rogers, Tim, etc…} The simcard contains all the network data that you phone needs to use the providers system. You will not have to relock the phone to use it with ATT.
    As concerns 3G. Yes, you can use T-Mo’s 3G network with the new iPhone as well. In fact, T-Mo is offering the iPhone in most every country that it services {except the US}.
    No, I don’t believe there is a prepaid service for the iPhone.

    Also like to sugggest that you not switch to ATT from T-Mo, unless you prefer paying more & having really crappy customer service. Also ATT has the LEAST {not most} bars in most places. I can place ATT phone next to T-Mo phone & ATT always has less bars {if any}

    Also. before wasting money on an iPhone, take a look at the Andriod phones. Android phones are an open source system that allows for unlimited capabilities. The iPhones are also open source, but only to keep up with Android. T-Mo has announced that it will be the first provider to offer the Android phones & will be releasing the before the year’s end.
    I know many people with iPhone’s & they are junk. there is not one thing about the iPhone that makes me want one. I think that you would be much happier spending less & getting a better smartphone. If you have a mac at home then you may like the iPhone; But it’s not worth even $50 in my eyes.

    iPhone updates are available through iTunes and in the past have been known to permanently lock unlocked iPhones. Generally if you unlock an iPhone there is an equally easy way to re-lock it. Initially it will probably take some time before people figure out how to unlock the 3G iPhone because it will have the new firmware 2.0. Once it is unlocked there will still probably be plenty of programs available for download. I know that if you unlock a current iPhone there are a ton of programs available for free.

    You can use the current iPhone on Prepaid, but it is only offered as an alternative to a deposit if you fail the credit check. Although Prepaid may be phased out with the new 3G iPhone.
